Thought I’d share a small quote from ”Practising the Power of Now’ – Eckhart Tolle:
“If you both agree that the relationship will be your spiritual practice, so much the better. You can then express your thoughts and feelings to each other as you as they occur, or as soon as a reaction comes up, so that you do not create a time gap in which an unexpressed or unacknowledged emotion or grievance can fester and grow.”
An eminently sensible approach you can apply to any relationship, not just the romantic type. However the skill lies in knowing how to express your thoughts and feelings in the moment, in a way that retains your integrity, honours the other person and isn’t misunderstood. I think what Tolle means here, is that expressing yourself at that point of emotion, creates an immediacy in the communication. Taking out some of the mind, ego thinking and replacing it with some heart or feeling energy.
It’s certainly worth a try as we all strive to improve our communication with those we love or are close to.
