She’s homely, she’s accessible, she’s Britain’s sixth richest woman and has an estimated fortune of £1billion.
Enter the lovely Dame Mary Perkins, co-owner of the largest privately owned optical company in the world: Specsavers.
She’s been voted as Director of the Year, 2011.
In 2007, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. She was the first woman optician to receive such an accolade, which recognised her services to business and the community in Guernsey.
So what’s the secret of her success?
Humility and the common sense to share her success, knowledge and women with those around her. Quite unlike the Hollywood stereotype of a ball-breaking bitch who steps on anything or anyone who gets in between her and the glass ceiling. When asked about her recent honour she heaped praise on her staff, her partners and her family. Lots of ‘we’ and not too much of the ‘I’.
There’s a lesson in there somewhere, if you look closely..
