Viral marketing to make you laugh


You may have caught the hilarious video Gap Yah when it spread via Facebook earlier this year? (I posted to Twitter in March).

The Oxbridge team behind the spoof video – Unexpected Items – are performing at the Edinburgh Festival this year, a mark of the success of the Gap Yah video and their follow-up ‘Newport’ a send up of Jay Z and Alicia’s Key’s New York, Empire State of Mind. 

Interestingly, in contrast to Gap Yah, which was adopted firmly by the Facebook fraternity, Newport’s success started with fans tweeting about it. Newport was such a runaway success, with more than two million hits on You Tube, that it caught the attention of Jay Z, the lawyers, the record company people, who didn’t quite see the funny side.  So You Tube have removed the video, but I hear it can still be found, if you look hard enough. He he.
